History of the land and Church Building
The property at 5130 appeared to be part of an 80 acre estate in 1835, and was sold to two men, a Stephen Campbell and Daniel Duck. (Which to this day the owners swear they still see the two men fighting over the property)
By 1876 Stephen and Daniel had died and the 80 acre property somehow or another was under the ownership of John H.R. Duck. On April 26, 1876 a court order from a fierce battling divorce settlement, a quit claim appeared to Francis Duck. The amazing part about this settlement that women were not regarded well if they were divorced and rarely did they own property.
It is told that Francis Duck could handle any man; she was as fierce and as mean as any a bulldog. She seems to walk the streets and still patrol her 80 acres. Once in a while you will hear stories of her kicking things around on here little journeys in the evening. Although no one has ever seen her, well except in pictures that is, she makes her presents known make no mistake about that.
By 1914 the 80 acres was in probate and long since had been divided up into lots. Builders had already begun to develop the properties. This didn’t make the Duck family happy, and actually caused a lot of fighting, it is reported that in the quite of the night, if you listen carefully you can hear the family arguing over the fate of the 80 acres.
On July 24, 1915 the pleasure boat “The Eastland” was hired by the local company Western Electric for their annual outing inviting all employees and their families.
Within minutes the Eastland capsized leaving 812 people dead. The people of course were all local within the village limits of Cicero and Berwyn and all were employed at Western Electric.
The pains and crying of total families wiped out. The local funeral homes made lots of money on this tragedy.
As a result of this horrific event and the money from all the funerals, The Hrejsa Mortuary that was across the street at the time from the questionable property that landed in probate. Four lots of property were purchased by a Mrs. Libuse Hrejsa in 1915 and a sizable Mortuary for that time was built. By the way Mrs. Hrejsa was the first licensed female mortician in the state of Illinois.
Mr. and Mrs. Hrejsa kept this funeral home going from 1915 to 1975. Now if anyone knows their history of Cicero they know it’s an old Mob town. Actually Cicero is still influenced by the Italians, now I am not pointing any fingers here I am just saying…
The funerals of well-known mobsters have come and gone. You see around the rooms of the building, in a Smokey room smoking their cigarettes and gambling at the tables. You can hear them talking about Johnny and “The Boss” fighting amongst one another. The talk of the killings and the frightful battles of gunning one another down can be played out right before your eyes. The room used for dressing and embalming still has the stench of the old fluids used left in the walls.
On a more peaceful and quiet night you can walk into that old embalming room and see some of the clothing hanging up that the mortician had to dress the deceased in. Oh those funerals were first class all the way; one out doing the other.
In 1975 a spiritualist minister bought the building and converted the Mortuary into a Church.
(Interesting enough, the Hrejsa’s had stain glass put into the chapel of their Mortuary knowing that one day it would be a church. Those windows are still in the chapel)
Well now…Spiritualists believe in the spirit and so it was a perfect match we are told. To this day the spirit roams around, make their presents known, and interact with many who flow through the doors of this church. After all why would you even come to a Spiritualist Church if you didn’t believe in the Spirit?
There's a growing interest in the phenomenon of shadow people.
Ghost apparitions are almost always a misty white, vaporish or have a decidedly human form and appearance, shadow beings are much darker and more shadow-like. In general, although the shadow people often do have a human outline or shape, because they are dark, the details of their appearance is lacking. This is in contrast to many ghost sightings in which the witness can describe the ghost's facial features, style of clothing and other details.
Description of Shadow People - Most often shadow people look like living shadows. When you stand near a wall and a shadow is cast of yourself, this is what shadow people look like, living shadows. They are most often seen out of the corners of the eyes, or as a fleeting image passing behind.
I have seen shadow people all my life, some I have had fear of and some just come and go. Leaving a night light on helps because light brings vibration, and shadow people prefer darkness. Darkness carries much less vibration; that is why we do our circle in the dark, so you can focus better with out distractions, and your rod shape cells can learn to become more functional.
How Do Ghosts Manifest
There has always been a part of man that wonders about things unseen, and about the veil that separates the living from the dead.
We do not fully understand or comprehend the para-normal, we are only just scratching the surface. All we can do is dissect our experiences, and marvel one bit at a time. We will take one small part of the paranormal, in this case ghosts, and run through some theories on how things work. If you want to know some ideas of how ghosts manifest in the physical world, it helps to differentiate between the two main types of haunting: residual and intelligent.
If the ghost or apparition is appearing in the same place and performing the same task every time, chances are that you have a residual haunting. The theory behind this type of haunting is that certain minerals (usually limestone and quartz) can act as a type of recording mechanism that takes an imprint of highly emotionally charged events, and can play them back is the atmospheric conditions are right. In many ways, it is a direct window into the past, in that you are witnessing an event happen before your eyes, even if it actually happened years ago.
With these types of manifestations, the apparitions interact with the environment as it was in their time, not necessarily ours. For example, if you live in an old place that has been renovated over the years, you might see a ghost walk up an invisible set of stairs, or pass through a solid wall. According to residual haunting theory, this could be because there might have been stairs or might not have been a wall present when the spirit was living. You are just a spectator, and the entity doesn’t even know that you are there.
If the entity that you encounter interacts with you, or otherwise seems aware of your presence, you have what is called an intelligent haunting. These ghosts manifest by pulling energy out of the environment and using it to interact. For example, the locations where an apparition or entity has been spotted will usually be 10 to 20 degrees colder than the surrounding environment. This seems to be because the entity pulls the heat energy out of the atmosphere to facilitate manifestation, creating a so-called cold spot.
Since energy can neither be created nor destroyed according to the first law of thermodynamics, there must be some reason that batteries and other electronic equipment sometimes go dead when a ghost is manifesting. Like heat energy, it seems that paranormal entities pull electric energy out of their environment. This also seems to be the case with electromagnetic fields. Our brains (and by proxy, our whole bodies) are run with electromagnetism. It is believed, due in part to the fact that the Earth itself is covered by an electromagnetic field, that paranormal manifestations are accompanied by a flux in that field. A lot of experienced paranormal investigators make an electromagnetic field detector a part of their toolbox, taking base readings in an environment so that any spikes in the field can be noted.
It must be noted here that high levels of electromagnetism has been shown to induce feelings of paranoia, sickness, or even hallucinations in controlled lab experiments. It is for this reason that testing the electromagnetic field is important to verify a haunting. If EM spikes can be proven to exist outside of mechanical means (like copper wiring or older electric machinery), and be shown to appear independently, the paranormal explanation gains much more credence. If strange things happen and there is a definable source for a high EM field, the paranormal explanation is much harder to prove.
As stated before, when it comes to understanding the ‘how’s and ‘why’s of ghosts, we are just scratching the surface. All we can do is quantify our experiences and describe them in terms we already know. That is why these are still theories, and paranormal studies aren’t quite yet considered a science. Of course, that means that the paranormal enthusiast and amateur ghost hunter is on the edge of the effort to explore a new frontier. By keeping informed on paranormal theory, taking investigations seriously, and doing thorough work, paranormal investigators are paving the way to an understanding of the world we cannot see.
Is it a ghost? Do I have a ghost? How can I tell if I have a ghost?
Look for natural causes of any strange events, and be a little skeptical. This will keep one level-headed and calm while trying to conclude whether a place is haunted or not. A rational, but open mind is the best tool in determining if the source of a possible haunting is indeed ghostly.
The two words “ghosts” and “spirits” have been used inter-changeably for hundreds of years.
Ghost is from the Anglo-Saxon gast, while spirit is from the Latin spiritus. As language developed,
the word ghost came to being used in describing the appearing of a recognizable person appearing
after their death; while a spirit came to be understood as the manifestation of an unknown person.
Ghost hunters on the other hand, will look at ghosts and spirits differently. In the ghost hunting
community, ghosts would be a disembodied person who has left fragments that are “stuck” in this physical world, typically due to trauma or unfinished business here on earth. They are still attached to people, things or events that occurred in the past. The key word with this is past, as the past seems to hold them here, instead of looking to the future which would cause them to move beyond their prior physical life. For whatever reason, they cannot let go totally of this realm, and either need direction or are looking for assistance in delivering a message or fixing a situation. This ghostly activity is known as an intelligent haunting.
Furthermore, it should be mentioned that some ghosts are non-intelligent, meaning they are only
residual energy of a prior event and not interactive. A ghostly action, such as walking down a hall
will occur over and over, whether someone is present or not. This type of ghost manifestation also
known as an unintelligent haunting will not interact with the physical world. In contrast, a spirit, to
most ghost hunters, represents someone who has moved beyond death, into the light, having had
their life review and now understands they are spirit. Issues of their former physical existence have
been worked through or are being worked through, and peace, love and joy are being
experienced. Often, all of us are watched over by spirits on the other side, who want to comfort us,
guide us and observe our lives. These spirits typically are loved ones, family, and friends – some
are known as spirit guides and angels.
How to tell if you have a ghost.
The following are some descriptions of ghostly activity, and thus are common phenomena found in
hauntings. It is important to not be afraid and understand that a ghost is a person who is most likely
wanting to be recognized for assistance. The following phenomena are not all-inclusive:
1) Cold spots. The manifestation of a ghost requires energy, and thus the area could be cold from
the ghost using the energy of a specific location.
2) Electrical disturbances, such as flickering lights and radios turning off and on.
3) Movement of physical objects, such as doors.
4) Items missing or moved.
5) Water turning off and on.
6) Goosebumps, chills, the feeling that you are being watched, or touched.
7) Sounds, such as footsteps, music, voices, whispers, rapping, banging, something being
8) Balls or orbs of light that appear and float around.
9) Shadows moving about a room or in the corner of one’s eye.
10) Odd behavior from a pet. Animals are very in tune with spirits around them.
11) Unexplained or known fragrances of the deceased.
12) Levitating objects.
13) Mists, or vapors that appear.
What does a ghost look like?
Ghosts can and do manifest physically in various forms. It is not understood why the forms vary,
but perhaps it is due to the condition of the soul of the entity. Ghosts appear as:
1) Orbs - These balls of light can float or move at rapid speed. Some believe these to be the first
or most basic manifestation of a ghost…perhaps the soul of a person.
2) Mists, Vapors, Ectoplasm - This form appears as smoke or fog, and is believed to be the
manifestation of spirit.
3) Shadow People - Known as “dark shadows” or “black ectoplasm,” these ghosts will often be seen
moving about. It is possible that the darkness represents a condition of the soul not yet
understood, such as immaturity, lack of understanding or knowledge.
4) Apparition - This is the full-bodied, non-vaporous appearance of a disembodied person’s spirit,
and is very rare. Typically described as “see-through.”
Ghosts can manifest anywhere. They may seem to appear more at night, because light carries vibration and its easier for us to see at night because there is less vibration to distract us. It is also surmised that the energy it takes to manifest in the physical realm, may be depleted when a ghost is around a crowd of people during the daylight. Although ghosts may appear during day or night, the night could provide a time when less people are active, and may afford a time when all types of ghosts could appear more readily. Others believe that intelligent ghosts only manifest around people, either through use of their energy, or to communicate with this world. A ghost is a subtle energy in most cases, but can vary in intensity.
What to do with a ghost.
If one has a ghost, then the obvious question is, “What do I do with the ghost?” Maybe a better question should be, “How can I help a ghost?” Finding common ground and comfort in the fact that a ghost is only a disembodied human being, seek to speak with the ghost. Most ghosts are lost, and looking for simple direction. Follow your instincts and try and understand if there is any left over, unfinished business that may help the ghost move on. Ask the ghost person openly, how can I help? Be not afraid to tell the ghost that you know they are there, that you recognize this and that they should understand that their physical body has died. Let them know this. Tell the ghost, that there is nothing to fear, and that they should move towards and into the light, where peace, love, joy, friends and loved ones await. Often times, a ghost doesn’t understand that they have passed on. Sometimes a simple conversation will free the troubled soul, and bring peace to the situation. Ghosts often will take simple instruction, such as, “Stop banging the pans at night.” Many times the ghost just wants someone to know that they are there, but if a ghost is troublesome, remember you are in control. If a ghost will not head to the light, then demand the troubled spirit leave. This is your place, and you don’t have to accept visitors.
Some ghosts are just looking to be recognized, until someone hears their story. Other ghosts are in dire need to deliver a message to a loved one. It is not uncommon for relatives of the deceased to receive a phone call from the other side of the grave, with a parting, “I love you.” The voice is typically immediately recognized by the loved one, and the message is usually short but clear. When phone records are checked, in most cases there is simply no record of the call at all. These are known as, “phantom phone calls.” Ghosts, though disembodied, are not without means. An intelligent ghost will get your attention if need be, whether through sounds, sight, smell or even touch.
Ghost Hunting - What NOT to Do
1. Trespassing. Always get permission before investigating private property. Several years ago, there was a news story about a ghost hunter who trespassed on private property to investigate a haunted house. The person who lived in the house thought the ghost hunter was a burglar, pulled out a gun, and shot him. (Fortunately, the ghost hunter was OK.) This is NOT a situation that you want to experience, so always get permission before exploring private homes.
2. Being fearful of Spirit. There's no need to be fearful of the spirit. Spirit cannot hurt you Ghosts are just people living in another dimension, or perhaps on another plane. They have no superhuman powers (with the possible exception of enhanced telepathy). They cannot "curse" you or physically harm you. In most situations, ghosts will not follow you home (unless you purposely invite them to).
Ghosts haunt a location, for a reason. If they could leave, Usually, ghosts remain on Earth because they're fighting reality, and want to change an event from the past. In other cases, they may have a message to pass on, or a small task to accomplish. Other ghosts are emotionally attached to a particular person or place, and have a hard time releasing this attachment.
It's important to remember that ghosts do not exist to cause destruction, harm and evil. Unfortunately, Hollywood portrays ghosts as harmful creatures—which causes people to irrationally fear ghosts. You should be far more concerned with the human beings you might encounter when ghost hunting An irrational fear of ghosts will prevent you from experiencing amazing things, and learning more about the paranormal.
3. Ghost Hunting Alone. Never ghost hunt alone. Some haunted locations are secluded—so you should always take precautions. An ideal ghost hunting group is a team of 3-6 people. At the very minimum, make sure you have one other person with you. What would happen if you fell, twisted an ankle, and there was no one available to help you?
4. Investigating a haunted location without telling someone where you are headed. Always make sure someone at home (or at work) knows where you are headed. This wayyour friend knows where to find you.
5. Drinking, smoking, or starting a fire at the ghost hunting location. A ghost hunt is no place for cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, or fire. Cigarette smoke can look like ghostly apparitions in photographs, and alcohol can distort your senses.
6. Taking pictures while facing the sun or moon (or at a right angle to the sun or moon). Avoid taking pictures while facing the sun or the moon. The light can flare off the camera lens and create a false anomaly. A bright or full moon can cause flares too. For best results, try to have light sources behind you when snapping a photo. Be very careful when shooting pictures indoors. Many objects can reflect off your flash, creating orbs or ghostly apparitions. Windows, TV's, metal items, glass, polished furniture, and polished floors can all reflect off your flash.
7. Daring or threatening spirits/ghosts to appear. Never dare or threaten spirit to appear. You might get your wish, and spirits aren't always friendly if you have threatened them. Always show respect for others around you – this includes ghosts/spirits, and property owners.
8. Ignoring your intuition or gut feelings. Don't ignore your intuition when ghost hunting. If you think you should explore a certain area, follow your intuition. If you feel upset or disturbed in a particular room, there's probably a reason for it. Investigate. This does not mean that everything you feel is true. However, following your inner guidance can help you in certain situations.
Cleansing and Sage
The ritual burning of herbs and herbal resins is common to many cultures in the world. From the rich frankincense of the Church and the Middle Eastern bazaar, to the heady incenses of Asia, to the raw energy of brush burning in many native cultures—the purification of space through this modality is a global phenomenon and one you can benefit from highly.
Burning sage is one of the oldest and purest methods of cleansing a person, group of people or space. While Native American sage burning is the most commonly recognized form of it today, it has nevertheless been a shared practice in other cultures too.
From the ancient Celtic druids who used sage as a sacred herb alongside Oak Moss for burning as well as medicinal purposes, to the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon whose ‘Palo Santo’ (sacred wood) sage burning ceremonies are still practiced to this day.
Spiritual cleansing is done to remove the negative energies or unwelcome spirits from your home using purified herbs. It is good to cleanse your home once in a while to adjust the emotional environment of your home and maintain peace. Whether you are moving to a new home or renting a place for new office, it is good to have it blessed or cleanse it by yourself to ward off negative energies and bring positive vibrations.
Spiritual cleansing with herbs or smudging clears away any negative energy, thoughts and bad feelings and helps in clearing one's body's aura. Spiritual cleansing with sage is done for protection against evil and negativity. Smudging is a powerful cleansing technique from the Native American tradition in which herbs are burned for emotional, psychic and spiritual purification. The effectiveness of smudging is based on the theory that the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and as it clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space to be regenerated.
Smudging is also effective when you are very angry, unwell, depressed or resentful or when had a fight with closed one.
Spiritual cleansing with sage:
Sage is a powerful herb which is held sacred in many religions due to its effective purifying energies. This small evergreen shrub is used in kitchen as herb for cooking and as herbal medicine due to its anti-biotic, anti-fungal and antispasmodic properties. It heals by bringing the patient back in to balance and cleanses the body and mind of negative spirits and impurities. This potent herb has been used for thousands of years in several rituals and ceremonies. It is used in cleansing rituals to establish positive energy, clarity of thoughts and healing.
There are many varieties of clarity of thoughts and healing.
There are many varieties of sage used in smudging. The botanical name for sage is Salvia and it is commonly called white sage.
Spiritual house cleansing with sage: Ritual
Performing a sage cleansing ritual for driving off negative energy from your home is not difficult. You just have to prepare yourself with some ingredients required to perform the ritual and gain knowledge about the entire procedure. To perform spiritual house cleansing with sage you will need.
White Sage, ceramic bowl or a large candle holder, matches, native music (if you desired)
Before starting the ritual, you have to mentally and physically distract yourself and concentrate on the smudging process.
The first step involves de-cluttering the space and making a peaceful environment in the room by switching off all the electronic gadgets. Take several deep breaths and bring your mind in a relaxed and positive state.
Once you have reached a positive frame of mind, prepare the sage for burning. The white sage for smudging is available in the form of wrapped long bundle. If you have loose sticks of white sage, place a handful of sage in the earthen bowl. Close your eyes and breathe deeply and light the end of the sage stick. Hold it in upward position and say your prayers, chants or requests for positive energy to cast out of any negativity. Visualize a bright light within yourself that will provide you shield against dark forces and negative energy. Offer the smoke of the sage smudge in all the directions of the house. Slowly, carry the smudge in the entire room to make sure smoke reaches every corner. Walk through the entire house, around the edges of the wall, corners of the frames of the doors and windows, bathrooms and your closets. Make sure you are handling the bowl safely, taking care of clothes in your closet and curtains. You can also use a large feather to fan the smoke in distant areas of your house.
Throughout the ritual, you have to focus on positive energy and recite prayers and chants. You may have chants or any soothing music in the background. Once you have completed the spiritual cleansing process of the entire home, extinguish the remaining sage bundle and you can save it for future use.
Conclusion: Spiritual house cleansing by using sage brings harmony and peace inside the home. It purifies the space.
