The world’s primary religions are often grouped into two broad families: Abrahamic religions and Indian religions. Each tradition carries its own sacred stories, symbols, and spiritual practices, yet all reflect humanity’s shared desire to understand the Divine and live in harmony with one another.

Abrahamic religions trace their roots to the ancient Near East and include Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Christianity, for example, centers on the life and teachings of Jesus and includes many denominations such as:

• Roman Catholic Church
• Eastern Orthodox Church
• Protestant traditions

Across these faiths, we see a rich tapestry of spiritual expressions — prophecy, visions, healing, angelic encounters, and deep devotion.

Indian religions form one of the oldest and most diverse spiritual families in the world. They offer profound teachings on consciousness, liberation, compassion, and the nature of the soul.

One of the world’s oldest living religions, Hinduism shapes the spiritual and cultural life of millions. It emphasizes:

• Dharma (righteous living)
• Karma (cause and effect)
• Yoga as a spiritual discipline
• Chakras as centers of spiritual and energetic awareness

Founded by Gautama Buddha, Buddhism teaches the path to awakening through mindfulness, compassion, and inner transformation. It has two major branches:

• Theravada Buddhism – the “Way of the Elders,” emphasizing personal liberation
• Mahayana Buddhism – the “Great Vehicle,” emphasizing universal compassion and the Bodhisattva path

Founded in the 15th century by Guru Nanak, Sikhism teaches devotion to one God, equality of all people, service, and the pursuit of justice.

India is also home to smaller but deeply influential religions such as:

• Jainism – emphasizing nonviolence and spiritual purity
• Zoroastrian communities that migrated from Persia
• Various regional and tribal spiritual traditions

Literature has always been a mirror of the human experience. It captures our behavior, our emotions, our struggles, and our moments of transcendence. When scholars study sacred texts through a literary lens, they are not diminishing their holiness — they are honoring the humanity within them.

A literary approach recognizes that:

• Literature takes human experience as its subject.   When we read, we enter into the lives, fears, hopes, and revelations of others.
• Reading is a shared experience.   Through stories, poetry, and sacred writings, we walk beside people from cultures and eras far different from our own.
• A literary approach to holy books allows us to identify and relive the human experiences portrayed.   We see the grief of Job, the courage of Esther, the compassion of the Buddha, the devotion of Sikh Gurus, the longing of Hindu poets, and the wisdom of Indigenous storytellers.
• Literature shows rather than tells.   Authors do not lecture; they place before us scenes, characters, and moments that reveal truth through lived experience.

This approach helps us understand that spiritual texts are not only doctrinal—they are human stories of encounter with the Divine.
